Content is a major factor in building out topics related to your brand that could come up in relevant searches — and that content isn’t necessarily housed on your own site. Content can come from popular sources such as YouTube, SlideShare, blogs and other sources valued by consumers, and in some cases, it will provide additional confidence in the brand since it is not in their owned website. In fact, having this content ranking well in the SERP should be part of their SEO success metrics.

With attention economy, value is placed on products that receive a greater amount of human attention and the results at the top of the PageRank garner a larger amount of focus then those on subsequent pages. The outcomes with the higher PageRank will therefore enter the human consciousness to a larger extent. These ideas can influence decision-making and the actions of the viewer have a direct relation to the PageRank. They possess a higher potential to attract a user’s attention as their location increases the attention economy attached to the site. With this location they can receive more traffic and their online marketplace will have more purchases. The PageRank of these sites allow them to be trusted and they are able to parlay this trust into increased business.
Search intent, accuracy, consumer confidence — if only search engines could read a person's mind when completing a search. Google can’t read your mind, but search engines can collectively measure and determine customer happiness with a local business by looking at that business’ reviews. If customers like a business’ products and services, then they regularly receive 4- and 5-star review, and the opposite is true for negative reviews. If your business has a poor overall rating, you need to work on fixing those issues because not only are those negative reviews harmful for bringing in new customers, they also signal to search engines your business isn’t a good choice for searchers.
These are paid advertisements via Google AdWords. You can differentiate these from organic (non-paid, earned) results because of the tiny yellow “ad” icon. Normally, you will also see paid ads at the top of the SERP as well. In this book, we are only talking about SEO for organic search results, not advertising through search engines. But it is important to understand the difference as a user, and as a search engine optimizer, as they can both be valuable.

Ok this is some pretty high level stuff here. There is still a lot of good information as well though. I remember when I was able to see the page rank of website on my google toolbar. I never really fully understood what it meant until later. What a person should focus on is good SEO practices to make search engines naturally want to feature your content on their search results.
Note that when a page votes its PageRank value to other pages, its own PageRank is not reduced by the value that it is voting. The page doing the voting doesn’t give away its PageRank and end up with nothing. It isn’t a transfer of PageRank. It is simply a vote according to the page’s PageRank value. It’s like a shareholders meeting where each shareholder votes according to the number of shares held, but the shares themselves aren’t given away. Even so, pages do lose some PageRank indirectly, as we’ll see later.
In February 2011, Google announced the Panda update, which penalizes websites containing content duplicated from other websites and sources. Historically websites have copied content from one another and benefited in search engine rankings by engaging in this practice. However Google implemented a new system which punishes sites whose content is not unique. The 2012 Google Penguin attempted to penalize websites that used manipulative techniques to improve their rankings on the search engine. Although Google Penguin has been presented as an algorithm aimed at fighting web spam, it really focuses on spammy links by gauging the quality of the sites the links are coming from. The 2013 Google Hummingbird update featured an algorithm change designed to improve Google's natural language processing and semantic understanding of web pages. Hummingbird's language processing system falls under the newly recognised term of 'Conversational Search' where the system pays more attention to each word in the query in order to better match the pages to the meaning of the query rather than a few words . With regards to the changes made to search engine optimization, for content publishers and writers, Hummingbird is intended to resolve issues by getting rid of irrelevant content and spam, allowing Google to produce high-quality content and rely on them to be 'trusted' authors.
Now, some buckets are worth more than others, and the three main buckets that you need to be aware of for search rankings are quality, trust and authority. So quality: what Google is trying to measure when they’re trying to figure out what sites should rank is offering something valuable or unique or interesting to googles searchers. For example: good content - if you are selling t-shirts and you are using the same description that every other t-shirt seller is using on their website then you are not offering anything unique to Google’s searchers. Even though your t-shirts might look pretty cool, the content is the same as everybody else’s, so Google has no way of telling that your t-shirts or your t-shirt site is better than anybody else’s. Instead, offer people interesting content. For example: offer them the ability to personalize their t-shirt. Give them information on how to wash it. What’s the thread count? Is it stain resistant? Is this something you should wear in the summer or is it more heavy for winter? Give people information, or even be more creative. Get people to share pictures of themselves wearing the t-shirt. Create a community of people who are interested in your product. Get a famous person to wear it and share that picture online. Do something different, do something unique. Show Google that you are different and better than the other search results.
